Fitting in and standing out

Of course, all of us, in some way, want to fit in. We are a generation of influence and following, wanting to be accepted by others.

This could be from the way we dress, to the music we listen to, or the TV shows we watch.

As students, we want to fit into the city we move to, the university culture and with our new flat mates.

However, fitting in means we are like everyone else, and Jesus and his disciples, definitely didn't fit in with everyone else.

Standing out as a Christian is more about how we act towards others and how we reflect the image of God through the life we live.

Jesus stood up for what he believed in, even when others didn't.

He never denied God, even when it probably would have made an easier life for him!

Jesus also spent time with people that were 'unlikely' and who were shunned from society. He made everyone feel loved and welcomed.

As a Christian, we are called to stand out and be set apart. Have a look at 1 Peter 2:9 that says, 'But you are chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession'. This says that if we have given our life to God, we are so important to him and have a very special role in his kingdom! How exciting is that!!!

If you wouldn't call yourself Christian. it is still valuable to learn from how Jesus acts. That life as a Christian isn't lots of rules but living with freedom and joy but also understanding the privilege of being God's child. Maybe you can ask us a question about an area of life you want to understand how you can stand out in?

So, stand out, be different but relate to others, show kindness and patience.
